South Yorkshire metro mayor Dan Jarvis has said social distancing is “more important” than ever as more businesses and amenities reopen following lockdown.
Government has announced the reopening of gyms, beauticians and outdoor theatres.
Indoor gyms, sports halls and leisure centres are set to reopen on Saturday July 25.
They will have to follow strict social distancing guidelines, including capacity limits, reduced class sizes and space between machines and equipment.
They will also be forced to improve ventilation and gym goers will be encouraged to shower and change at home.
The mayor said the virus is still prevalent in the region and it has “not gone away”.
People are urged to wear face coverings on public transport, indoor spaces and places where you cannot maintain social distancing.
The Sheffield City Region mayor said: “As the easing of lockdown continues with gyms, beauticians and outdoor theatres set to reopen in the coming days and weeks, I want to remind people in South Yorkshire that the threat of the Coronavirus has not gone away.
“Now more than ever we must all remain vigilant. As more people return to work, shops and public spaces, following the guidance on social distancing is more – not less – important.
“People must wear face coverings on public transport, in indoor spaces, and anywhere that you cannot maintain distance from others.
“Everybody should also continue to regularly wash their hands and would urge anyone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus to immediately self-isolate and get a test.
“Only by continuing to work together and adhering to the guidance issued by Public Health England will we beat this virus.”
